Spider Species
Spiders are classified in the scientific order araneae, which is part of the arachnid class of arthropods. A common misconception is that all arachnids are spiders. It is true that all arachnids have eight legs, but there are many other eight legged arachnids that are not spiders. Scorpions, mites, and ticks are some of the more commonly known arachnids, close relatives to the spider. We have created a simple chart to help clear up this common misunderstanding.
There are approximately 40,000 different spider species currently identified. It is estimated that there are well over 150,000 spider species in existence, however science has yet to identify the vast majority. The list to the right shows the spiders currently indexed (so far!) by Spider Identification.org, organized alphabetically by their common name.
